How to play SuitUP™ Original
FAQ's
Is Ace high or low?
Ace can be played high or low.
This means an Ace can be used before a 2 or after a King, depending on the run.
You may also go over the top when placing or adding to a run.
Example:
Queen, King, Ace, 2
This keeps the game flexible and allows players to continue building runs when the sequence wraps around.
Do I have to discard every turn?
Yes. Every turn must end with a discard.
Even your final play must end with a discarded card. You only go out once you have played your cards and discarded your last card.
What counts as a run?
A run is a sequence of cards in order. In SuitUP™ Original, each card in the run must be a different suit.
A run can have a maximum of 8 cards, using all 8 suits.
Example:
4, 5, 6, 7 — each card must be a different suit.
Maximum run example:
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack — using all 8 different suits.
How is scoring handled?
The goal is to have the lowest score in every game..
At the end of each round, all players count the cards left in their hands.
Card values are scored as follows:
Number cards: face value
Example: 4 = 4 points
Jack, Queen, King: 10 points each
Ace: 10 points
Action cards:
If you are playing without actions, action cards are scored at their regular card value.
If you are playing with actions, any action card left in your hand at the end of the round is worth 20 points.
The player with the lowest total score after the agreed number of rounds wins.
Can I go out with an action card?
Yes. Going out with an action card is allowed, and it can be a smart way to get rid of points.
However, if you are playing with actions, the action must be completed before the round is tallied.
You do not officially finish the round until the action has been played.
How does the Trade action card work?
When a Trade action card is discarded during Action Play, the player who discarded it must complete the trade action.
The player who discards the Trade action card chooses:
Who they want to trade with, and
How many cards they want to trade — one card, two cards, or their whole hand.
The player being traded with does not get to refuse and must complete the trade.
The Trade action card is only active if the game is being played with actions..
What does the R action card mean?
R means Reverse.
When an R action card is discarded during Action Play, the direction of play reverses.
If play was moving clockwise, it now moves counter-clockwise.
If play was moving counter-clockwise, it now moves clockwise.
What does the S action mean?
When a Skip action card is discarded during Action Play, the next player is skipped.
That player loses their turn, and play continues to the following player.
What is the value of a Skip action card?
The value of the Skip action card is the same as its scoring value.
What does the "X" action mean?
When an X action card is discarded during Action Play, the player who discarded it chooses which player to block.
The blocked player misses their next turn.
A player can only be blocked once per turn around the table. They must have one live play before they can be blocked again.
Can the same player be blocked more than once in a row?
No. A player cannot be repeatedly blocked without having a turn.
Once a player has been blocked, they must have one live play before they can be blocked again.
This keeps the game fair and prevents one player from being frozen out.
When does the X block take effect?
The X Block takes effect on the chosen player’s next turn.
When an X action card is discarded during Action Play, the player who discarded it chooses which player to block.
That player misses their next turn.
Can the same player be blocked more than once?
A player can only be blocked once per turn around the table.
After a player has been blocked, they must have one live play before they can be blocked again.
This prevents the same player from being blocked over and over without getting a turn.
What happens if the draw pile runs out?
This is rare because of the size of the SuitUP™ deck, but if the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile and turn it over to create a new draw pile.
Leave the most recent discard available to continue play.
What does “one live play” mean?
One live play means the player has had a real turn where they were able to play.
They were not blocked, skipped, or prevented from taking their turn.
Once they have had one live play, they can be blocked again.
SuitUP™ Original: Can I pick up from the discard pile?
Yes, but only if the discarded card is live.
A live discard means the card was just discarded by the player immediately before you. You may only pick up the most recent discarded card.
You cannot search through or pick up older cards from the discard pile.
SuitUP™ Original: On my first turn, if I have both a run and a set to lay down, can I play both?
No. On your first lay down, you can only play one opening combination:
A run of 4
Four cards in sequence, all different suits.
OR
A set of 3
Three cards with the same number or rank.
Even if you have both, you must choose only one to play.
If you have a run of 5, you may only play 4 of those cards for your first lay down. You can add the extra card on a later turn once your opening play has been completed.
SuitUP™ Original: Can I play extra cards on my first lay down if it happens later in the game?
No. Your first lay down must always be one opening combination only, regardless of when it happens.
You cannot lay down extra cards until after your first lay down has been completed.
SuitUP™ Original: What if I have a run of 5 on my first lay down?
You may only play 4 cards for your first lay down.
The extra card can only be added on a later turn, after your first lay down has been completed.
SuitUP™ Original: What if I cannot lay down on my first turn?
If you cannot lay down on your first turn, continue playing until you can make a valid first lay down.
Your first lay down must always follow the first lay down rules, even if it happens later in the game.
For your first lay down, you may only play one opening combination:
A run of 4
Four cards in sequence, all different suits.
OR
A set of 3
Three cards with the same number or rank.
You cannot lay down extra cards on your first lay down.
Even if your first lay down happens on your second, third, or later turn, you still must follow the same rule: one valid opening combination only.
SuitUP™ Original: How do you win a round?
The first player to play all of their cards and discard their last card wins the round.
A player must end their final turn with a discard to officially go out.
SuitUP™ Original: Can I add to another player’s cards?
Yes, but only after you have completed your first lay down.
Once you have played your first lay down, you must wait until your next turn before adding to other cards.
On future turns, you may:
Add to your own runs or sets
Start new runs or sets
Add to another player’s laid-down cards
SuitUP™ Original: Can I add extra cards to my first lay down on the same turn?
No. Your first lay down must follow the opening rule only.
You may only play:
A run of 4, all different suits
OR
A set of 3
You cannot add extra cards until your next turn.
SuitUP™ Original: Can I win without discarding?
No. You must discard your last card to win the round.
A player is not out until their final discard has been made.
SuitUP™ Original: What does “May I” mean?
“May I” is used when a player wants the card that was just discarded, but it is not their turn yet.
The discarded card must still be live, meaning it was just discarded and play has not moved past it.
SuitUP™ Original: How does the “May I” rule work?
If a player wants the card that was just discarded, they may say “May I?”
Before they can take it, the player whose turn it is gets first choice.
If the player whose turn it is wants the card, they take it.
If they do not want it, each player ahead of the person who called “May I” is asked in order if they want the card.
If no one ahead of the “May I” player wants it, the “May I” player may take the discarded card PLUS a card from the draw pile.
SuitUP™ Original: What happens if someone ahead of me wants the card with "May I'?
If another player ahead of you chooses to take the discarded card, they get it instead.
That player takes:
The discarded card
PLUS one card from the draw pile
You do not get the card.
SuitUP™ Original: Can I use “May I” on any card in the discard pile?
No. You can only call “May I” on the card that was just discarded.
You cannot search through the discard pile or ask for an older card.
